Improve Your Health...
And The Planet's, Too!

We can all minimize our "carbon footprint" and boost our health. Try some of the following ways...

1. Organic - Eat and drink organic products. Everything from fruits and vegetables to tea, wine and coffee.

2. Toss the water bottles - They can contain toxins detrimental to your health. Switch to a stainless steel water bottle.

3. B.Y.O.B - That's Bring Your Own Bag! When shopping for groceries or clothing...carry a reuseable bag. They are very chic!!

4. Reduce Food Intake - When you go out to eat, share a meal or eat off the appetizer menu. At home, serve food on smaller plates and dish up smaller portions. You can always go back for more IF you decide you are truly hungry.

These are all examples of how "less is more." And it's good for us, too!

Give Yourself A Break...

We tend to have very high expectations of ourselves...even to the point of being destructive and unhealthy.

Give yourself a break. Go easy on yourself. Lighten up and be less demanding.

Try these ways to be good to yourself and perhaps enjoy life more...

1. First, take a deep breath. Just relax the muscles in your shoulders, neck, back, abdomen and legs.

2. Don't compare yourself to others. Do your best..no one else really matters.

3. Remove negative thoughts about your actions or behaviour. You are doing the best you can do and that is good enough.

4. Leave the dishes in the sink overnight. Let the laundry sit in the basket one more day. The chores will be there tomorrow...and maybe someone else will pick up the slack if given the chance.

5. Life is shades of gray! Black and white thinking will give you a headache, backache or stomach ache. Be open to new ways of doing things and seeing new possibilities.

DIABETES -
7th Leading Cause Of Death In The United States.

Estimates show that 24 million people in the United States have diabetes, an increase of more than 3 million in two years. And, 57 million people have pre-diabetes.

Diabetes causes the body to produce less insulin, or to use it less effectively, which in turn causes blood sugar levels to rise.

This damages blood vessels and organs, leading to blindness, kidney disease, limb loss and heart disease.

What can you do to help prevent this disease from happening to you?

1. Keep your weight down to a healthy level. That means reduce the belly fat by lowering calories and increasing activity.

2. Eat foods that add to your good health. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, skinless chicken and turkey, and wild seafood.

3. Get up and move around; find a walking group, go dancing, join a gym or recreation center, work in the garden. Doing anything that gets your body in motion is a good thing.

4. Feed your soul...meditate, take a nap, practice yoga, pray. These "quieting" times are excellent for your body, mind and spirit!

Switch It Up!

When we improve our diets we create healthier bodies...it's that simple.

So, when choosing foods look for the healthy alternative. It's easy, tastey and good for you and your family!

White Potatoes - Sweet Potatoes

Vegetable Oil - Canola Oil

White Flour - Whole Wheat Flour

Iceberg Lettuce - Romaine Lettuce

Milk Chocolate - Dark Chocolate

Mayonnaise - Avocado

Sour Cream - Plain Yogurt

Be creative and try your own substitutions!

Fight Inflammation!

Many health and medical professionals agree that inflammation is the root cause of many illnesses and diseases.

If we can suppress the inflammation in our body, then it stands to reason we can be healthier, more mobile and experience less pain.

Here are some ideas to relieve inflammation and boost your body's immune system to fight off disease.

1. Improve your diet - Eat omega-3 fatty acids, eat fiber such as whole grains, fruits and veggies and spices like ginger and tumeric.

2. Up your water intake - Avoid sodas (especially diet sodas!), sugary fruit juices, and dairy products.

3. Sleep zzzz - We've mentioned this many times before, but it is imperative to get adequate sleep. That means 8 hours per night, or more!

4. Reduce your stress - This is really fun! Practice yoga, meditation and deep breathing. All are calming and will give you peace of mind!

Look For The Good In Life!

Everyday we are bombarded by negative thoughts. We may be hit with negative words of others. We are surrounded by fear and tragedy on the daily news.

We are personally responsible to keep our awareness sharp; our thoughts and words positive.

So, keep your body, emotions and mind healthy. Look for the good is situations and affirm that goodness!

Let your inner radiance shine!
See every difficulty as an opportunity.
Bless others with a kind word or compliment.
Speak supportively to children about their hopes and dreams.
Express your love through kind actions and words.

There is plenty of good for us all!

Affirm: My good cannot be taken from me! I am loving, vibrant, and healthy!

Insomnia = Poor Health!

We, at The Natural Healing Way, discuss sleep alot!

We are BIG proponents of getting adequate rest for physical and emotional good health.

But, not everyone has an easy time getting to sleep and staying asleep. Over-the-counter sleep aids can leave you feeling drowsy or drugged out. Perscription sleep meds may become addictive.

Consider these natural remedies instead...

Socks - wear warm socks to bed, or use a heated foot warmer. Sleep in a cool room but keep your feet are warm.

Chamomile tea - drink a cup of chamomile tea before going to bed. The herb will calm you.

Nutmeg - the oil in nutmeg can act as a sedative. Stir a half teaspoon of powdered nutmeg into a glass of warm milk. Milk contains tryptophan, which encourages sleep by increasing serotonin levels in the brain.

Sleep well...it is a major component of high quality wellness!

The Importance Of Urinary Health...

Urinary and bladder infections are extremely common. Approximately 8 to 10 million people experience this malady annually.

While the infections are treatable, they are uncomfortable and potentially dangerous to the kidneys.

These foods will help keep your urinary tract healthy...

Parsley - Steep fresh parsley in hot water for tea and drink 3 - 4 cups daily. Combine fresh parsley and water in a food processor to make parsley juice. Add carrot or apple juice to enhance the flavor.

Cranberry juice (no sugar added) - Proanthocyanidins in the juice make it difficult for the strains of bacteria responsible for certain kidney, bladder and urinary tract infections to adhere to cells in the body. Drink 2 ounces of pure cranberry juice diluted in 6 ounces of water 3 times a day until the urinary discomfort subsides.

Buchu leaves - Used for centuries, steep 3 - 4 tablespoons of dried buchu leaves in hot water, strain and drink 3 times a day until the condition improves.

Tomorrow, learn 3 ways to alleviate insomnia.

Eat Your Way To Good Health!

"You are what you eat!" Remember that statement by Adelle Davis from the 1960's?

Food has healing properties. We can benefit from eating certain foods to help prevent, soothe and cure illness.

For arthritis sufferers try the following...

Cherries - rich in anthocyanins, a class of chemical known to suppress the production of inflammation-related compounds in the body.

Cod-liver oil - is an anti-inflammatory, and research suggests that it might limit cartilage damage caused by osteoarthritis.

Vitamin D - users have been shown to be less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

Note: If you take Vitamin D in supplement form, adding cod-liver oil is probably not needed.

Lastly, avoid nightshade foods such as, white potatoes, eggplant, all peppers and tomatoes from your diet for a few weeks. If your arthritis improves, give them up permanently.

Tomorrow we'll give you some foods to improve urinary health.

Muscadine And Inflammation Relief!

People with rheumatoid arthritis have double the risk of suffering heart attacks or strokes.

It's the inflammatory processes underlying rheumatoid arthritis that appear to increase the risk of serious heart problems.

Reducing the inflammation is key to relieving this risk and the inherent pain.

MuscadinePlus with its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties is a non-toxic, non-chemical, natural way to find relief.

Click "Inflammation" on the navigation bar to the left of this page for more information.

A Matter Of Perspective

What we think is so important to our lives. But, how we think is even more important.

What we think are thoughts about what we have to do, how we look, what grades our kids are getting, how clean our house is, and so on...random, persistent chattering in our minds.

How we "manage" those thoughts is essential to our well-being.

When we say, "I have so much to do on my list," "I look tired today," "Johnny's grades are on a downward spiral," and "The house is filthy," we have "framed" our thoughts and feelings negatively.

Negativity is dangerous, damaging and demoralizing to healthy living.

Try stating your thoughts from a positive perspective..."Accomplishing my to-do list feels good," "I am happy to see the sunrise this morning," "Johnny improved in two of his subjects last semester," and "My house feels like a home."

State what you want, what you love and what makes you happy.

Forget that which drags your spirits down...you can't afford a negative thought!

It's Easy Eating Greens...

This summer change up your salad ingredients with the following...

Watercress - Pungent taste. Provides iron and lots of calcium.

Dandelion - Rich in Vitamin C, K and beta-carotene. An excellent source of calcium and iron. Also, a liver cleanser.

Escarole - Very high in fiber and potassium.

Arugula - Use instead of basil. Pulse in a food processor with olive oil, parmesan and garlic for a super pesto!

Spinach - Contains mega-levels of Vitamins A, C and K. Great for the immune system and strong bones.

Your Home Is Your Gym!

Movement creates flexibility, tones muscles, improves cardiovascular health and makes you feel alive!!

Your home is an opportunity to move...concentrate on the movements, accentuate your actions, and focus on the body parts you are working.

Here are some ideas for you to try.

Climbing stairs is a perfect way to tighten butt muscles and work the heart.

Lifting and carrying bags of groceries is an opportunity to strengthen the arms, shoulders and biceps.

Washing windows, vacuuming and sweeping vigorously act as an aerobic activity.

Gardening is great for stretching and anytime you are on the phone stand on one leg to improve your balance.

Walk Your Way To Good Health!

The benefits of a regular walking program include a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, breast and colon cancer. Walking helps fight osteoporosis, anxiety and depression. You will also boost your immune system and reduce the frequency and duration of colds and flu.

You will lose body fat, tone up muscle, increase your energy and sex drive!

Why wouldn't you want to start a walking routine? So, here are some ideas...

First, make walking a priority. Set the time aside and "just do it."

Second, start slowly...begin with a 10 minute walk to the corner of your block and back. Gradually, increase your time and the ground you cover.

Walking outside will give you the opportunity to commune with nature, meet your neighbors and absorb the daily requirement of Vitamin D. An inside walking track is great, too.

Make sure you stay hydrated. Take a "baby" size bottle of water with you on your walk.

Lastly, we highly recommend that you discuss any health issues with your physician prior to starting an exercise program.

Let The Sun Shine! But, Protect Your Skin!

With the onset of summer and spending more time in the sun, remember to use sunscreen.

A sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 is sufficient for most people. If you are very sensitive or fair, use something with a higher SPF content.

Apply about 2 tablespoons of sunscreen liberally over your skin and apply at least every 2 hours. Don't scrimp.

Wear a hat with a 3 inch brim and UV-blocking sunglasses.

Have fun while soaking up the Vitamin D but, do it wisely with sunscreen.

Diabetes? Take Action!

It is estimated that fewer than 10% of people with diabetes are taking the necessary steps to control it.

Each year in the US, 82,000 diabetics lose a toe or foot to amputation and up to 24,000 lose their vision. It is imperative that steps are taken to improve diabetic's health.

First, talk with your doctor about testing for diabetes and if you are diagnosed, follow his/her instructions.

In addition, you can do alot to participate in the overall control of the disease.

If you are overweight, drop those pounds now! It can add years to your life.

Eat well and exercise. This is not an optional choice, this is mandatory to your success.

Take care of your feet. Impaired circulation increases the risk of blisters, sores and infection.

Depression is twice as common among diabetics. Be aware of and manage your depression.

Control cholesterol and blood pressure. This will significantly reduce the risk for heart attack, kidney disease, neuropathy and eye damage.

Check the benefits of MuscadinePlus and Holistrol for cholesterol and blood pressure control.

Fun and Brains!

In a recent study, people with the highest levels of social interaction had the highest levels of mental function!

Using Arnica and taking 2 - 6 capsules of MuscadinePlus daily is a winning combination for relieving inflammation.

A Moment To Meditate...

As you read this, you are breathing, but you are probably unaware of it.

You have many thoughts on your mind, thinking about someone in your life, something you have to do today or remembering a conversation you had yesterday.

Meditation is an experience of "present moment awareness."

That means being absolutely focused on each silent inhalation and exhalation of your breath.

When you stop your mind and place yourself into that state of absolute calm, your body happily responds.

Take a few minutes to disconnect from your busy thoughts and activities. Enjoy the peace of mind and relaxation to your body experienced with meditation.

Men's Healthy Foods

According to a recent article in BestLife Magazine, What Matters To Men, the following are foods that all men should eat for optimum health.

2. Yogurt - Containing "live and active cultures" provide hundreds of millions of beneficial probiotic organisms. They improve the immune system and provide protection against cancer.

Life Is Good!

Our needs in life are really very simple...love, health, happiness, family and friends and interests to pursue.

Why, then, do we sometimes find ourselves struggling through the day?

Perhaps it's because we have momentarily forgotten all of the good in our lives. As human beings we sometimes focus on what's not working instead of what is.

Today, and everyday, let's start out being grateful. Give thanks, appreciate our surroundings just as they are, send love to the others who share the planet with us.

And, finally, love ourselves by keeping healthy with proper diet, exercise and positive thoughts.

Each of us has a purpose in life! So, let's go out and make this the best day ever!

The Inflammation Connection

Recent studies have shown that most people with diabetes also have arthritis. Arthritis is marked by severe inflammation.

Director of Nutraceutical Research at the Univeristy of Georgia, Dr. Diane Hartle writes, "Inflammation is a key process in multiple chronic diseases." That's why it's so important to control this sometimes quiet symptom. How?

Professor Hartle in her book, "Muscadine Medicine" tells us that phytochemicals, such as the ones in muscadine grapes are anti-inflammatory. "In one experiment we did with muscadines, an extract of grape skin was compared with a powerful pain reliever...The muscadine extract was more powerful than the medication. That got out attention!" Stop inflammation in its tracks with Muscadine Naturals, 100% pure, powdered grape skins. For more information, visit our website www.the-natural-healing-way.com and check out the Healthy Lifestyle Store.

Let Your food Be Your Medicine

The skin and seeds of red and purple grapes contain a powerful antioxidant called resveratrol. This flavonoid s both water and fat-soluble and therefore even more versatile than vitamins at protecting body tissues.

Resveratrol improves circulation, protects your skin from wrinkles and lack of elasticity, promotes healing and may reduce inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.

Grapes contain many more health giving properties called phytochemcicals. Regular intake of phytochemicals helps to thin your blood, decrease cholesterol, strengthen blood vessels, boost immunity, inhibit allergies and fight the onset of cancer.

Grapes are a great source of potassium and have unique cleansing properties. As they contain almost 80 per cent water, grapes are also a useful low-calorie snack.

Note: Two MUSCADINE PLUS capsules have as much resveratrol as an entire bottle of red wine. Check out the Healthy Lifestyle Store on our website and start feeling vibrantly healthy today!

But, Who Takes Care Of You?

We are all "caregivers."

Whether we are tending to our children, a family pet, our next door neighbor or an aging parent, we take care of others. Sometimes this is done at our own expense.

If you are experiencing several of the following symptoms, you may be suffering from compassion fatique.

1. Frequent headaches?

2. Feeling overwhelmed and stressed?

3. Exhausted and tired most days?

4. Lost your sense of humor?

5. Feeling short-tempered and withdrawn?

6. Skipping meals?

STOP! It is time to call on back-up resources and give yourself a break.

You can only be of help to another when you have taken care of yourself first!

Stress Free - 24/7/365

It takes twice as long to heal when you are under stress. Relaxation is a major component for achieving good health.

Try the following to improve your road to wellness...

Every Hour - Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Slow down your thoughts.

Every Day - Unplug from your routine in some way. Listen to soothing music, massage your hands and feet, pick some flowers from the yard.

But, did you know there are wonderful benefits of "touch" to your personal health...

Touch can help reduce pain, anxiety, depression and aggressive behavior. It can enhance immune function, healing, lower heart rate and blood pressure.

Make a mindful effort and bring more touch into your daily life.

Hold your partner's hand when you take a walk.

Give your body the gift of a massage. Pay attention to what feels especially good.

A loving touch is bound to make everyone feel great!

The Brain-Stomach Connection

According to a new study from the journal NeuroImage, if you are overweight your brain may have a hard time telling when your stomach is full.

To feel "full" try the following:

1. Add 1-2 teaspoons of flaxseed oil to your food. These fatty acids create a sense of satisfaction.

2. Before eating, sit quietly and breathe deeply. Relax, be in the moment, mindful and express gratitude.

3. Cook and eat at home. Preparing your own meals slows down the total eating process.

Sleep, Sleep, Sleep!

At The Natural Healing Way sleep is one of our favorite activities!

It is healthy, restorative, anti-aging, meditative...it's a winner!

And, the latest studies continue to show how important it is to get adequate sleep. Our go-go-go society doesn't always honor "down time" but that must change!

Poor sleep decreases our immune function and increases anxiety and depression.

It depleats our bodies and minds of necessary healing time.

If you need help sleeping, go to the web for information or talk with your physician.

Some natural sleeping ideas from us tomorrow...

5 Easy Ways To Look Younger...

Nothing fancy, nothing complicated, just a few tricks to look younger quickly!

1. Sleep - Add 15 minutes each night for six nights. You have added 90 minutes of sleep to your week or 360 minutes (6 hours!) in a month.

2. Wear sunscreen on your face and neck during the day and a moisturizing cream at bedtime.

3. Paint your finger nails red or pink, and wear rings to make your hands look more youthful.

4. Wear a sheer liquid foundation that evens out your skin tone. Heavy make-up increases the appearance of lines.

5. Add volume to your hair. Flip your hair over, add mousse at the roots, then dry while upside down.

Reading Labels - A Must!!

It is mandatory for products to have their ingredients labeled for the consumer to read...

But, it is our responsibility to read them carefully and to fully understand their contents.

This is not an easy task!

Ingredient labels can be confusing, allusive and misleading.

So, here are some things to definitely avoid.

First, if you can't pronounce it...don't eat it!

Second, the first 3 ingredients are the essence of the product. The rest are probably preservatives.

Third, at all times AVOID...MSG, hydrogenated oil, salt, artificial coloring and sweeteners.

Fourth, NO ANTIBIOTICS in eggs, milk and meats.

We will continue to add to this list.

Read the labels, don't believe everything you read and remember...fresh, local grown, organic fruits and vegetables are the best.

Brain Booster!

Recently, many books, TV programs, stimulating games and new information are available about the brain and its function.

This is very exciting and important information for everyone and every age.

Here are a few suggestions if you are interested in staying current on this subject and how it effects your health!

Public Television, "The Brain Fitness Program" has been on TV and is available on DVD.

Also, on PBS stations, "The Secret Life of the Brain." Check local listings.

"Everything You Need to Know to Feel Go(o)d," by Candace B. Pert, PhD.

Some Thoughts To Start Your Day!

We know there is great power in reciting affirmations. To "affirm" is to "assert postively."

Affirmations tell our conscious and subconscious mind that we mean business and expect the good we proclaim.

Here are some thoughts to carry you through the day!

The universe is abundant and my world is plentiful.

I walk, run, dance and jump with joy everyday.

Life excites me!

I am motivated and achieve my goals effortlessly.

I am grateful for all that I have today and everyday.

I experience and enjoy vibrant good health!

Write your own list of positive thoughts and share them with us!

Aging With Purpose!

Chronologically, we all age. And considering the alternative, we gladly celebrate another birthday!

How we age is within our control! There is alot we can do to honor this exciting time of life! For example...

Consider any myths you may hold about getting older. "I move slower in the morning because I'm getting older." Or, "Aches and pains are just a part of aging."

These preconceptions are just that, preconceived ideas. They do not have to be your reality!

Second, how do you see your future? Is it full of fun, learning, growing and fulfillment? Or have you lost interest in learning a new language, giving a dinner party for friends or working on a political campaign? It's time to rethink your mindset!

Third, do you know your strengths, the contributions you make to your community and family and your purpose for waking up each day? If not, do some soul searching and get into the swing of life.

We, at The Natural Healing Way, know you are a vital member of our planet.

Please read the many articles on our website for creative ideas, current information and motivating ways to make positive changes in your life!
