Chronic Inflammation Can Lead To Heart Disease and More
Nature's Response
Temporary inflammation is good. Chronic inflammation is not. Here's why...
Inflammation is your body’s response to injury or irritation. Symptoms include pain, swelling, redness, warmth in the tissues and loss of function. This may be caused by everything from a bee sting to a fall to a dog bite. Inflammation is your body’s way of protecting you from further harm. If you fell off a bicycle (like I did last week) and your wounds didn’t get red and painful, you’d probably jump right back on (like I would have except for my skinned elbow and inflamed knee).
A Chronic condition
So sometimes redness and swelling is good. However, “…chronic inflammation, (meaning long-term and continual) even if it is mild, can alter cellular functioning and cause the body’s greatest threats: heart disease and cancer.” So says Dr. William Meggs, author of The Inflammation Cure.
Dr. Meggs says that although we’ve been treating inflammation for centuries, the last few decades has shed the most light. Here’s some of what we’ve recently learned.
. Elevated cholesterol is probably not the primary cause of cardiovascular disease. Recent research has shown that inflammation is most likely the culprit.
. Chronic inflammation even in one part of our body affects every other part. In the last half century, we’ve learned the interconnectedness of every muscle, tendon, joint, organ or cell in our body.
The Disease Connection
Dentists have long known the connection between periodontal disease and heart disease. You would think the leap from gums to heart and knees to heart wouldn’t be so far. But because of specialized medicine, we are usually treated in parts.
Knee hurt? Go to an orthopedic doctor. Heart skipping a beat? Go to a cardiologist. Stomach hurt? Find an internist. Finally the medical community is affirming what holistic practitioners have know for centuries. “The knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone” etc. Every part of your body is connected to every other part.
Inflammation, the Root Cause
Because we know now that inflammation is at the root of most diseases, it’s important for you to pay attention to that nagging ache that’s been there for years, that knee that hurts when you walk up stairs or how your back talks to you when you lift even something that’s not so heavy. Awareness is the first step to healing. But then, what do you do about chronic inflammation?
You can
. Quit doing whatever physical activity pains you
. Take massive amounts of Advil, Alleve or other drugs, all of which can cause liver damage
. Make some lifestyle changes that will enhance your healing
. Take a natural supplement with massive amounts of resveratrol, your number one disease fighter– no chemicals, no interactions, no side effects.
