Resveratrol in Wine and Grapes The Natural Remedy for Health
WHAT IS RESVERATROL?
It's a natural molecule produced by several plants, especially fruits such as blueberries, pomegranates, cranberries and grapes. It first came to the attention of the research community as the possible explanation for the “French Paradox”.
Statistics show that the French eat a diet high in saturated fats. Yet there is relatively low incidence of heart disease. In 1999, over 200 males put of 100,000, aged 35-74 died from coronary heart compared to less than 100 in France.
Researchers concluded the reason was that the French drink lots of red wine. Red wine contains resveratrol, which protects the heart.Common sense also tells you that Europeans walk much more than we car-a-holic Americans, so the exercise adds to their physical wellness.
This amazing molecule is typically produced by extracting the substance from whopping amounts of fruit. Most fruits have such small quantities, you'd to eat half a vineyard of grapes to get the benefits. It's in the compressed form that the power lies, much of which is found in red wine.
The amount of research being conducted has grown at a rapid pace since 2000. In recent months, studies emerged on its anti-aging potential due to its apparent ability to mimic calorie restriction in laboratory animals. Statistics show that calorie restriction is one of the healthy ways of living longer.
RESEARCH
One groundbreaking study was conducted and supported in part by the National Institute of Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Rafael de Cabo of the NIA and Dr. David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School conducted the study.
According to the November issue of Nature, they used two groups of overweight, aged mice, both eating a high calorie, high fat diet. One group was given the molecule. The supplemented mice had better health and lived much longer those who did not receive it.
The non supplemented mice showed markers that in humans predict the onset of diabetes. Pathological studies of heart tissue indicated an abundance of fatty lesions. Degeneration and inflammation were significantly less for the supplemented group. Dr. de Cabo said, “After six months, we essentially prevented most of the negative effects of the high calorie diet.”
The findings are the first to show that resveratrol can affect the health and survival of mammals. The findings build upon previous research that showed it had anti-aging properties that extended life spans in lower forms.
BENEFITS
It's a potent antioxidant. Red wine has a relatively high level of resveratrol due to the winemaking process, incorporating the seeds and skins of grapes. Recent studies have established that it not only protects the heart, but also has other important benefits that may counteract inflammation, cancer and viruses. The molecule is even found to protect the brain against several neuro-degenerative illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease.
Researchers have also noted that red wine and grapes, particularly Muscadine Grapes, not only contain resveratrol, but also contain up to 600 different compounds. One of the most important is Piceattanol (pronounced Pie-see-at-a-nol), which has proved beneficial in cancer research. Resveratrol is:
• A powerful antioxidant that may liberate your body from damage caused by free radicals
• An amazing anti-inflammatory to ease: chronic pain from arthritis, sports injuries, fibromyalgia, muscle stress and other debilitating aches and pains
• An energy booster
One of the highest sources is grapeskins, particularly the thick skins of the Muscadine Grapes. The manufacturer of our Muscadine Grape Supplements uses a unique, chemical-free process that maintains the high level of natural antioxidants found in the fresh fruit. The dried fruit powders are blended for consistency. Muscadine Naturals supplements are made of 100% Muscadine Grape Skins – nothing else.
